As the sun fades away on the Isla VIsta horizon, all thats remains is the shadow of a lonely surfer, and his hope for a perfect wave. The oil rig companions the sun as a constant reminder of human reliance on nature. Along Del Playa. by: Allina Mojarro amojarro@umail.ucsb.edu

Jordan Laband. Photo taken at UCSB West Campus, January 9, 2010, jordanlaband@umail.ucsb.edu. This photo shows humans and nature in harmony together. The tide is coming in as a surfer in the left hand corner makes his way down the beach. An oil rig in the background offsets the gorgeous California sunset with its rich colors and blending hues. One can see the delicate balance of life in Santa Barbara as the land, the sea, and mankind all coexist as one in this unique and prosperous environment.

Ellwood-Beach
Britta Gustafson, Ellwood beach near the Sandpiper Golf Course, brittag@umail.ucsb.edu. These old wooden poles at Ellwood illustrate a complex human relationship with the local beach that extends back thousands of years. The scene includes: piles of stones balanced by contemporary visitors as a non-polluting way to enjoy and decorate the beach, wood pilings anonymously planted decades ago to defend the bluff from erosion, and camouflaged pieces of rusty metal left by hundreds of years of industrial oil and fishing activity.

Andrew Florin. arf@umail.ucsb.edu Photo taken above IV Beach, January 7, 2010. This photo for me symbolizes the peace and stability that the community of UCSB and IV deserves. No matter how long and exhausting the week, and in some cases the weekend, can be, its gratifying to just sit back and take in the sunset and surf. That's worth protecting.

Javier Martinez Photo taken by the UCSB Lagoon javier_martinez01@umail.ucsb.edu The bizarre or the unusual here is simply the fact that in contrast to seeing beer cans or paper trash strewn about UCSB's coast, this image conveys how a clean coast coupled with the red-orange glow of a setting sun, is something that should motivate and inspire cleanliness on this and every coastline. A clean coastline will ensure that beach goers will be able to enjoy the natural treasures in life like the beauty and colors of a setting star.
